ALL BROWNS, GREENE COUNTY TN CENSUS

1830 AND 1840

PREFACE: By 1830, several different Brown Families lived in Greene County, TN.  I have attempted to separate these men with the surname of Brown into family "groupings" based upon those who resided near each other as determined by the census pages.When the 1830 census is compared to the 1840 (and later) census, it becomes apparent that the sons of the early Brown settlers had married and are enumerated in their separate households.  In many cases, these "2nd generation" Browns reside by or very near their parents.
 
BOLD  DENOTES KNOWN AND/OR PROBABLE MEMBERS OF THE JOTHAM BROWN FAMILIES. THE JOTHAM BROWN FAMILIES LIVED IN NORTHERN GREENE COUNTY IN THE CROSS ANCHOR AREA. FOUR SONS OF OLD JOTHAM BROWN, WHO DIED IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, VA BETWEEN 1797-1800, CAME TO  GREENE COUNTY ABOUT 1805. THESE SONS WERE SYLVANUS, DAVID, JOTHAM JR. AND WILLIAM BROWN. BY 1830, THE SON WILLIAM WAS DECEASED. THESE BROTHERS HAD SONS WHO APPEAR IN THE 1830, 1840 AND THE 1850 CENSUS. THE BROTHER, DAVID, DIED IN 1843; THE BROTHER, SYLVANUS, DIED AFTER 1845 AND BEFORE 1850. THE BROTHER, JOTHAM JR. DIED IN 1859.

  Joseph Brown (b. 1767; d. 1845) is buried in Old Harmony Cemetery in downtown Greeneville.

  minor heirs of Peter Brown, decd.

Comment:  David Brown died c. 1843.   He is closely associated with families with the  
surnames of MACE and WILLOUGHBY.   He is possibly the David Brown who married Elizabeth
Johnson in 1799, bond by Phillip Stout.  The Stout families are enumerated on page 188 and 191 of the 1830 census.
The MACE families are also enumerated on page 188.  The administrator of David's estate was William Willoughby.

Comment:  David and George appear to be the sons of Thomas Brown on page 191 and/or David Brown
on census page 188.  A David Brown purchased items from the 1843 Estate of David Brown.  
In the 1836 Civil District Listing, District 6, are Thomas G. Brown, David Brown Sr and David Brown Jr.

Comment:  He appears to be the William Brown buried at Old Harmony Cemetery:  b. 5-5-1757; d. before 1840
His Will dated 3-23-1835 named wife Violet.  Wife was to "stay with friend Valentine Sevier".  Apparently had no children.

Comment:  Son of Old Jotham Brown.  David died in 1843 leaving a WIll; possibly buried Kidwell Cemetery.

Comment:  David, age 20-30, is a son of David (Sr) on page 202, named in Will.  James is not named
in David Sr.'s 1843 Will.  James is probably a newphew.

Comment:  William is a son of David Brown (Sr) on page 202.  Married 6-11-1816.    
William, b. 8-6-1797; d. 2-3-1864, leaving a Will.  Buried Price Cemetery.

Comment:  He is possibly a "Quaker" Brown.  Thomas, died 1-21-1840, buried at New Hope Church Cemetery. SEE PAGE 223
Thomas' Son, Samuel, signed his Will 6-6-1825 naming father, Thomas, and Father-in-law Solomon Beals.
Samuel also named his wife, Hannah, and 3 children:  Thomas H., Solomon and Catherine.

Comment:  JOTHAM WILLIS, AGE 20-30, is on page 227.  He is a son of ESTHER BROWN WILLIS.
Esther BROWN WILLIS, is sister to Sylvanus, David, Jotham and William Brown.  There is no known
relationship to the Jotham Brown Family to this George Brown.  Their listing on the same page appears
to be coincidental.

Comment:  Son of Sylvanus;  In the 1840 and 1850 census, Jotham is enumerated with his first wife, Eliza Bryant.
  In the 1860 census, Jotham is enumerated with his 2nd wife, Hannah Garner.  He died in 1875, leaving
  a Will.  In the 1836 Civil District Listing, he is listed as Jotham S. Brown.

Samuel's father is Thomas in the 1830 Census, page 216.  They are part of the Quaker Brown Families.

Comment:  The Brown Families on page 47 are the "Quaker" Browns. In 1836, they reside in Civil
District 15, which would be the Quaker Knob area of northern Greene County.

Comment:  William, may be the William Brown who married Polly Myers on 1-14-1840 (note no children in their
household)????  If this is the case, they possibly reside near Blue Springs (Mosheim).  
HOWEVER, James and William Brown may be part of the Quaker Browns.  In the 1836 Civil District Listing, District 15, are
Thomas, James, Isaac and William Brown.  The James Brown in District 15 is the only James Brown in
the entire 1836 Civil Districts Listing.  William Brown (b. 1805; d. 1883) is buried at New Hope Cemetery with
the annotation "son of Thomas and Rachel Brown".
