Stephen Brooks was born on Cape
Hatteras, N.C. He was
educated for a sea-faring life.
Spent some time at sea and
obtained a Captains commission.
He was admitted to the Methodist
Conference at Newborn, N.C. in
1789 and immediately set out
with Bishop Asbury for
Lexington, Ky. his first
circuit. In 1790 he was on the
Danville circuit, in 1791 in
Middle Tennessee, in 1792 on the
Greene Circuit, in 1793 he
settled in Greene County,
Tennessee and became a prominent
man in the state. A member of
the Constitutional Convention in
1796. Chairman of the Masonic
Convention that organized the
Grand Lodge of Tennessee in 1811
and was the first grand
chaplain.
For more than a half century
this eminent man of God labored
for the cause of Christ and the
welfare of the state. He married
Anna Earnest March 26, 1793, who
died suddenly on a trip to North
Carolina and is buried near
Allens Stand on January 6, 1800.
He married Margaret Whittenberg
who sleeps beside him here. He
gave this graveyard and church
lot to the public. This stone
was erected in 1926 by those who
appreciate the mighty works he
wrought.
