HYDER, S.W.

S. W. HYDER is one of the leading citizens of Carter County, and is a very prosperous farmer, was born on Powder Branch. Carter Co., Tenn., August 21, 1817; and is the son of Michael HYDER and Sarah SIMMERNON. The father was born in Virginia, and was of English descent. He was a farmer, and a practical and successful man, and was in most of the Indian wars of the early history of Tennessee. The mother of our subject was born in Virginia and was of Dutch lineage. She was the mother of four sons and one daughter.

Our subject was raised on the farm and received a practical education in the country schools. He has followed agricultural pursuits all through life, together with which he has milled. He has been a success in his calling, and is a very well respected citizen. In early time he was captain of a company of State militia. In 1840 he married Louisa EDENS, daughter of Nathaniel T. EDENS. Eleven children blessed the marriage, and the wife died, her death occurring in 1866. In 1873 he married Sarah E. FAIR for a second wife. Our subject is a member of the Lutheran Church citizen, always encouraging public and domestic enterprises.
