Cocke County, Tennessee
1850 Mortality Schedule

Persons who died during the year ending 1 JUN 1850, in District 11
Submitted by Bruce Price

There are 3 pages of mortality schedule with the 1850 census. The census-taker, A. J. Fletcher, made the following notes about the county at the bottom of the pages:
The county may be divided into two districts, the high and the lowlands. The highlands are mountainouse and healthy. The lowlands lie upon the Nolachucky and French Broad rivers and are not so healthy, but very productive. Perhaps more so than any other portion of East Tennessee. The principal crop is Indian corn which the farmers feed to swine & horses for southern market. The year ending 1st June 1850 was a healthy year compared with others preceding it. The county of Cocke, though not an unhealthy district, is not so healthy as other portions of East Tennessee. The most common disease is chills and fever. The most fatal has, of late years, been congestive fever. The ??????, typhus fever and pneumonia also occasionally appear. I know of no ?best course?. Iron ore is abundant in the mountains and water power is at most without limit. The principal rocks are the blue and black limestone and mountain boulder. There are fine forests of white pine and the black pine is a common growth. The first settlement was made about the close of the revolution. The county has no commerce by water. Driving and hauling are the only means of exchanging our staples for articles of consumption.
