Othnal Minter Brassfield was born in Claiborne County TN on April 25, 1811. He was the son of James L. Brassfield and Mary Stulse. James L. Brassfield was also born in Claiborne County TN March 3, 1796. Othnal Minter Brassfield married Jane Splawn, also born in Claiborne County, TN in 1818. They were married in Richmond, Ray County, MO in February 1834. Jane was 16 years old at that time. Jane is reported to be a niece of Stonewall Jackson and she was raised on a plantation with slaves. She died sometime after 1870. Othnal later added the title of Major to his name and was generally referred to as Major Minter Brassfield. He died February 1, 1896 in Goldfield, Wright County IA, a town he founded (originally named Brassfield).
