Death of John D. Johnson

On Sept. 25 at Cumberland Gap, Mr. J.D. Johnson, while endeavoring to board the accommodation train to Harrogate fell and fractured his skull, from the effects of which he died a few hours later. Mr. Johnson worked in Tazewell several years at the saddle business, and was considered the best workman in this section. He leaves a wife, who has our sympathy in her hours of bereavement.

Married—-On last Saturday night, at the home of the bride, Mr. Wood Noe to Miss Mary Burke, daughter of Jonathan Burke. Square Stone performed the ceremony. Hope the couple success.

Trying to prove if John A. Holland was the son of William H. Holland, there is a gap in William’s children that would indicate that, abt 1828. John, (my GG grandpa) married Louisa Mallicoat in Grainger Co. TN 1846. Moved to Washington Co. AR 1850. William was a renter and “sharecropper” left very little paper trail. Margaret Lynn Weaver Owens 5/4/98 6:41:57 PM Central Daylight Time
Searching for any information on C. J. OWENS who, according to the death certificate of his son (Isaiah Van Buren Owens), was born in Virginia, his first name was Charles, and his wife’s name was Poly An Ivy (the spelling on the death certificate). Word of mouth says C. J. was born around 1810, and the last record found on him was the 1860 census when he and his wife were living with their son, Gilbert, in Union County. Have records indicating one of his oldest sons, Isaiah, was born in Claiborne County, Tn. in 1838. C. J. and Polly reared their family in Claiborne and Union Counties (probably did not move, the county boundary just changed). Margaret Lynn Weaver Owens

Steve Standley 5/3/98 6:18:14 AM Central Daylight Time
1)Moses was born in 1766 in Standleydale, Scotland. He died in Claiborne County, TN near Cumberland Gap. Moses and his wife Lizabeth Bird or Byrd had five children after their son Noble* was born, as follows:Ramsey, Lemuel, Jeremiah, another son, then their last child, William Harrison Standley, born in Claiborne County, Tennessee, May 15, 1814. He married Elizabeth G. Shelton, March 1,1834. 2)Moses Standley,( son of William Standley, b. abt. 1720 and wife Judith), was born abt. 1752 probably in Orange Co., VA and died place unknown. He married Elizabeth Byrd or Bird abt 1773 probably in Henry Co., (Now Franklin Co.) VA. They had the following children:Moses JR, b. 1775, died 1853 in Hancock Co.,IL; Richard, b. abt 1777–d. 1835-1840 prob. in Morgan Co.,IL;Joseph b. 1785, d. 1860; Thomas b. 1787, d. unknown, and Noble Standley, b. March 1791 md Nancy Smart—-This Noble Standley, my GGG grandfather, died in 1862 in Morgan Co., IL. If I could find any information on Moses and/or Standley(Stanley) in Claiborne, Co., it might help to resolve the two somewhat different versions of our early ancestry. I know Noble Standley migrated from Franklin Co., VA to Robertson Co., TN and then to Morgan Co.,IL. So, he may have lived in Claiborne Co.,TN before Robertson Co. and that may have been where Moses died. Thanks again, Steve Standley

BONNIE Y SMITH 98-04-16 22:40:11 EDT
Seeking information on MAHALA DUFF who was a “moonshiner” on the VA/TN county line in the 1800’s. Story says she built her home across the state line of TN and VA, possibly Claiborne Co/Lee Co. When the Law of either state came to arrest her, she simply moved across the building to the other State, out of their jurisdiction. Who was Mahala married to?? When? Did she have any children? What happened to her? Was she related to the Lee, Scott, Washingon and Russell Co. VA DUFF’s? Thanks. Bonnie Duff-Smith, P.O. Box 254, Judson, TX 75660-0254, or Email: MZQB11A@prodigy.com

Doug Sherman 98-04-15 22:06:17 EDT
I am looking for information on James CHEEK/CHICK. He was born ca. 1799-1800, possibly in VA. I believe he migrated from Knox Co, KY to Claiborne Co., TN between 1820 and 1830. The 1850 Census lists his wife Jane (born ca. 1797-1798) and children James (b. 1835) and Mary (b. 1838). Other children possibly include Jefferson (b. 1818), William (b. 1824), and Robert (b. 1828). James served as a constable and Justice of the Peace in Claiborne County and had obtained a land grant. I would like to know if his father was James CHICK of Knox, KY; if Jefferson, William, and Robert were his sons; and when he and his wife died.

Wilson Cemetery

CHURCH-YARD OF OLD SALEM BAPTIST CHURCH

SPEEDWELL, CLAIBORNE COUNTY, TENNESSEE

Surveyed October 3, 2006 by Sheila M. Collins Fuhr and Mildred Collins Wasser. The cemetery is in good condition with lots of old stones that have faded beyond the point of being read. The cemetery contains many unmarked graves which is sad because that person that interred in that grave will be lost to history.

Wilson, George Washington 1817-1886, husband of Charlotte Wright Wilson 1822-1885. Pioneer Christian Benefactor. Son of David Robert Wilson, Sr. 1759-1847.

The land of this site to establish a church, school and public cemetery was donated by George Washington Wilson in 1871. Named in his honor, these institutions served God and man since that time. The cemetery was formerly a Wilson Family Cemetery on his estate. This land is part of the vast original estate owned by his father, David Robert Wilson, Captain in the American Revolutionary War, before Tennessee became a State.

This historical Memorial Marker plus site marker and grave stones were erected by his descendants in 1886, one hundred years after his death to honor his devotion and service to his God, family and fellow man.
