Abstract of Information available in the Service Records:
Taken prisoner 16 Feb 1862 at Fort Donelson and sent to Camp Butler, Illinois. He took the Oath of Allegience in prison and was sent to Vicksburg, Mississippi on the Steamer John H. Dove to be exchanged and was declared exchanged at Aiken’s Landing 10 Nov 1862. He re-enlisted in Company I, 24th Tennessee Infantry.

Personal Information about the Veteran (Not contained in the CMSR): William Allen Barber was born 20 Oct 1840 in Sumner Co., TN to Allen and Malinda Barber. Wm Barber served unofficially under Captain Ellis Harper after his exchange. He was arrested by U. S. forces and jailed at Gallatin, TN for 93 days. He was married twice…his first wife unknown….his second was Harriet Leavinia Barber Perdue the widow of William E. W. Perdue. William Allen Barber died 16 March 1917 in Sumner Co., TN and is buried in unmarked grave in Shanklin Cemetery outside Portland, TN.
