9th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment

The report of Adjutant General James P. Brownlow, State of Tennessee, with regard to the 9th Infantry Regiment reads as follows: “This regiment was never mustered into service-it being transferred and merged into other regiments before it was completely organized, or rolls made for it.” No mention of the regiment is made in the Official Records. The muster-in roll of the field and staff officers of Colonel John A. Rogers’ 7th Tennessee Infantry had the “7th” crossed out and the “9th” written in. The regiment was evidently first called the 7th Tennessee Infantry, and since there was already a 7th East Tennessee Infantry, the name was changed to the 9th. Since Colonel Rogers’ regiment was referred to in the Official Records as the 7th Tennessee, the history of this regiment will be found under that name.
