Hugh GARNER and P. H. GARNER to Granvil ARNOLD – Bill of Sale of slaves, 1857:
We have this day sold and do hereby convey to Granvil Arnold his heirs and assigns forever for the consideration of fourteen hundred and fifty dollars to us in hand paid a boy slave named Newton aged about ten years also one other boy named Juber we warrant the title to said slaves to the said Granvil Arnold his heirs and assigns against the lawful claim of all persons and we also warrant them to be sound, healthy, sensable and slaves for life this 11th day of February 1857. State of Tennessee Anderson County} Personally appeared before me, R. H. Coward Clerk of the County Court of said county and state P. H. Garner and Hugh Garner the within named bargainers to the foregoing bills of sale with whom I am personally acquainted and acknowledged that they executed the within bills of sale for the purposes therein contained. Given under my hand at office in Clinton this 9th day of April 1857. R. H. Coward Clk.
