Local Man Killed
Glen Bernard White, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Owen White of Detroit, and grandson of W. B. (Bill) White, manager of Community Hardware in Briceville, was killed in a truck accident near Toledo, Ohio, last week. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret Wilson White and one brother, James, of Cleveland, Ohio. Services were held Sunday at Laurel Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Lewis Ward officiating. Burial was in Leach Cemetery, Lake City.
FARMER
Did you know one of the most unusual farms in East Tennessee is located right here near Lake City? We received a report that Mr. Fred Waddell had received a blue ribbon at the Knoxville fair for his white Leghorns and went on to win first prize at the state fair in Nashville. Your reporter went to visit Fred, who lives two miles north of Lake City on the new highway. We discovered that he not only has approximately 1300 chickens but raises pigs, pheasants, chucker quail, mallard ducks, geese and to our amazement we found he has a pond where he raises blue-gill and bass up to thirty inches long. In addition to all this, Fred has approximately 40 head of registered Herford cattle.
During the month of September Fred sold 22,000 eggs to the people of Lake City and vicinity. We didn’t realize before just how much bookwork there was to raising chickens. From about 4:30 to 6:30 every morning you can find Fred counting eggs, averaging the output of each hen individually, and culling out the fowls who are not productive. Fred cordially invites visitors to this unusual farm and anyone who is interested may find him just above the Mountain View Restaurant. His name is on the mail box.
STUDENT
J. K. Queener, a Lake City High graduate of 1954, is a student at Belmont College in Nashville. J. K. is not just an ordinary student who goes to and from classes—he studies from 8 to around 2 and then reports to the War Memorial Building where he is assistant supervisor in the title department of Finance and Taxation. J. K. is studying to be an educational director. He hopes to attend the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary at Louisville. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. I. D. Queener.
Recipe of the Week
Almond Loaf Cake by Mrs. Lillian Winfrey. 1-1/2 C sugar, 1 scant cup butter, 5 eggs, 2 C flour, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 1 teaspoon almond flavor. Cream sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Drop eggs in one at a time and beat a moment (this is the secret of success in the cake). Add flour. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour. The longer the cake sets, the better the taste.

Another Picture in the “Do You Remember?” Series
(Picture of girls’ basketball team) This was not too many years ago—1949 to be exact. The Lake City Grammar School team, who won eleven games and lost none for that year.
Lakers and Jacksboro Tie
The Lake City Lakers battled to a 13-13 tie against the Jacksboro eleven on the home field before a record crowd last Friday night. It was to be the homecoming game for the Lakers but due to inclement weather this part of the schedule was postponed by school officials. The Lakers continue their good work and play at home again next Friday.
High School Hi Lites
The Spanish Club has been organized with Miss Ida Gamble as sponsor. The following officers were elected: President, Don Perkey; Vice-President, Annette Hatmaker; Secretary Sue Ann Jahn; Treasurer, Tommy Sharp and the Reporter is Kenneth Kesterson.
Another club organized last week was the Future Homemakers of America, better known as the FHA Club. The club has Mrs. Paul Miller as its sponsor. The following officers were elected. President, Shirley Foust; Vice-President, Jerrie Queener; Secretary, Jo Ann Hamilton; Treasurer, Pat Hawkins; Historian, Nina Brazelle; Parlimentarian, Yvonne Newman and the report is Joan Albright.
Mrs. Bean’s Bible Class met and formed a Bible Club and elected officers as follows: President, John Wray; Vice-President, Shirley Foust; Secretary, Belva Eller and Reporter is Phyllis Duncan.
WSCS Meets
The Women’s Society of Christian Service met Thursday, October 4th, at the home of Mrs. H. M. Stokes. The program topic was “Volcanoes in Southeast Asia” led by Mrs. C. T. Miller.
The Homemakers Club met last Tuesday at the home of Mrs. D. A. Weaver. A food demonstration was given by the Home Demonstration Agent, Miss Angie Fugate. Officers were elected for the coming year: Mrs. Glenn Greene, President; Mrs. Chris Bittle, vice-president; Mrs. Wes Van Nosdall, sec. and treasurer and Mrs. Maggie Duff, recording secretary. They meet the 1st Tuesday of each month.

CHURCH NEWS
The YWA Federation of the Clinton Association met at the First Baptist last Tuesday for their Quarterly meeting. Miss Robbie Stonecipher of Lake City was elected vice-president.
The Friendship class of the First Baptist gave a program at the Sunday a. m. services. Those participating were Mrs. Chris Bittle, Mrs. Bonnie Page, Mrs. Carl Dew and Mrs. C. A. Cooper. The theme of the program was “Our Expectations of Victory.”

A revival will begin at the First Baptist Church on October 15, with Ralph Murray of the Smithwood Baptist Church in Knoxville in charge of services. Lawrence Luallen will be music director.
October 14th will be observed as Laymen’s Day for churches of the Tennessee Baptist Convention. The First Baptist Church has planned a special program with the Brotherhood in charge of the services.
The American Legion Auxiliary’s food sale last Saturday was a big success and another is planned for October 13th. All proceeds from the sales are for the Legion building.
